Carton Sealing Tape - The Different Grades

When it comes to carton sealing tape, there are three types of adhesive on the rolls we supply - Hot Melt, Acrylic and Natural Rubber. There is a difference between the three and if you don’t know which one is best for your application, it could be affecting your company’s bottom line.

Below are the characteristics of adhesive used in manufacturing each tape:

Hot Melt
  • Have significantly higher adhesion to almost any surface
  • Have much higher shear performance - the measure of how the adhesive performs over time under constant pull
Acrylic
  • Hold up in temperatures of 32 to 150 degrees F
  • Have a strong resistance to aging. They will stay clear in color longer and will not age yellow after exposure to the sun and elements. This is very critical to the application considering it could be high dollar graphics or display boxes you are applying the tape to
Natural Rubber
  •  Adhesive is the most aggressive you can find in packaging tape
  •  Performs well when applied to boxes that are manufactured with high recycled content or are dusty from warehousing
  • Have fast positive bonding and is moisture resistant

The use of cushioning (void fill) puts constant stress on tape. The biggest mistake people make while applying tape is stretching it during its application. In our experiences, this is the number one reason why tape fails. Adjusting the tension dial on your tape gun and allowing the tape to do its job instead of forcing it is key to its performance.

Which tape is right for you & your company? Let us help you determine the answer!
